GREETINGS FROM THE PRINCIPAL:
Dear Glenwood Gladiator Family,
Welcome back!  We are so glad to have you be a part of the "Home Court Advantage" again this year.  We are off to a great start.  The students are adjusting to a new grade and are already learning exciting things.  They have also spent some time completing the district writing assessment and showcasing their knowledge in reading by taking the DIBELS test (which addresses fluency) and the SRI (which focuses on comprehension).  I want to encourage you to continue to cheer for your child each day and encourage them to do their very best.  Their future depends on it!!

"Coach" Mark Johnson
Glenwood Principal

Building Security
Over the summer Kearney Public Schools have installed cameras and entry buzzers in some of our school buildings with the exception of Kearney High School.  The High School presents some unique challenges regarding securing its entry points.  The addition of the Resource Officer sends a very positive message to our students and community that safety of our high school students is a high priority.

Kearney Public Schools continues to establish a high level of priority for the dafety and security of our students and staff members.  Over the next few weeks each school site will establish specific procedures for students, parents and patrons to enter our schools during school hours.

Meadowlark and Emerson Schools were the first to activate the camera/buzzer system.  All the other sites will initiate that same system over the next few weeks.  Once again it is the intent of the Kearney Board of Education to continue to maintain quality education for all students in a safe and secure learning environment.

Thank you for your understanding in this matter.

NOTES FROM THE NURSE:
As your children enjoy the outdoors, I would like to share a little information from Two Rivers Public Health Department about mosquito bites and insect repellent.  Mosquit repellent is a chemical applied to outer clothing and/or skin that makes a person "undesirable" to insects.  By avoiding mosquito bites, we are avoiding a possible bird-misquito-human transmission of West Nile Virus.

Kepp yourself and your family safe:
    *    When possible, stay inside at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are active
    *    Wear long sleeves, pants and socks.  Light colored clothing is best
    *    Use insect repellents with DEET, Picaridin and oil of lemon and eucalyptus according to package directions

DEET is a chemical which is effective in repelling mosquitoes.  DEET is not recommended for use on children under two months of age.  The concentration of DEET in products may range from less then 10% to over 30 %.  The efficacy of DEET plateaus at 30 % which is the maximum concentration currently recommended for infants and children.  Products with greater percentages of DEEt do not provide greater protection, they only last longer.  The most sensible approach would be to select the lowest concentration effective for the amount of time spent outdoors.

If your child will be outside for an extended period during the school day (for example, on a field trip or outdoor education) and you want them to wear insect repellent, we ask that you aply the product of your choice prior to bringing them to school.

Thank you,
Julene Lesher, RN - School Nurse
