OS X Base Image Install Notes
Install OS
Custom Install--remove additional languages
Remove all printer drivers except HP
Go through the Apple setup wizard and enter necessary (and only that) information.
Run software update and install pertinent updates. Include
AirPort as this image will be on laptops as well. Be sure to
include ARD up to 1.2.4.
Install ARD 2.
Run software update again and update ARD.
Configure system preferences.
Lock prefs that should not be touched again Preference changes include:
Date and time synchronization with KPS NTP server, display seconds
Account creation: district wide (district) and building (media)
Computer name
Enable ARD for district & media accounts
Set QuickTime speeds, disable auto-update
Disable software update automatic checks
Sound--uncheck volume in menu bar
Energy saver, change sleep to 60 min, display only,
shutdown at 7:00 pm (cron's weekly runs at 4:30 on Saturday morning, so
may need to think about that)
THIS IS THE BASE OS IMAGE!!! STOP HERE AND BUILD WITH NETRESTORE!
KPS All-district Installation
After an image has been built, we can add district-wide software and utilities.
Run Software Restore
Install Classic Support (rebuild desktop after sw installs/before rebuilding image)
Install AppleWorks (currently only on system restore CDs only in
district, meaning we install much software and take off all but this)
Office 2004--custom install. No Entourage, no MSN Messenger, all
clip art and templates, only include language packs for English,
Spanish, French, German, Japanese. Install fonts to the system
and remove from first run (do not replace Apple fonts with MS fonts),
disable auto-update, execute once to get through registration info
Firefox (execute once)
Print Selection Service
Shubert--PDF viewer
Shockwave Player
Flash Player
Remove read/execute permission of Utilities from all but admin
group (I left the Java subfolder enabled). If permissions are
ever repaired on this disk (which can be done through the imaging
process as well as troubleshooting steps), this step will be reversed.
Create /Users/Shared/Movies and /Users/Shared/Music with RWX access for all.
BUILD AGAIN WITH NETRESTORE. THIS IS THE DISTRICT "GENERIC" IMAGE
This image will be used to build all other images. Specific instructions follow.
As of 1/18/05, this image replaces the formerly used "minimalOSX" image
and may be installed with minor customization on certain HMS/SMS
computers.
Individual Images
"Generic" eMac
As of 1/18/05, this includes Elementary Media, SpEd eMacs, Kindergarten +,
There will be post-install instructions for each type of install.
Take the generic image, run the Apple Software restore. Classic
has already been installed, so it is not needed. Do not install
games. All other checkboxes are OK.
