The 2006-2007 school year is here and I am excited and pleased to have
the opportunity to spend this school year with your child. With
this important year at Kenwood, your child's last, I want to make
it their best year ever! Even though I will only have
your child for a short time I want to make a positive educational
impression that will last a lifetime and instill the love of learning.
Your child will become part of our classroom learning community.
We are all unique and each child brings their own learning style,
interests, history, and most important their hopes and dreams. I
want to help them to realize their goals, instill a good
work ethic, develop a positive attitude and value the importance of
treating everyone with respect. All of these values will help
insure a path towards meeting their hopes and dreams.
The following information will be useful and answer some of your
questions about our classroom. If you have additional questions,
I can be reached at school (698-8200) or at home (236-8240).
Planner - Our planner is vital in fifth grade. Our motto
is "If you plan to learn, you need to learn to plan." I require
students to fill out the planner, use it, take it home each
night to share with parents, and bring it back each day.
We
use our planner by filling it in each morning with what we want to
accomplish for the day. Then throughout the day we check
it. We check and mark it after each class, usually before
lunch, and also at the end of the day to see what we need to take home
for homework. If an item is checked off it means it is done and
completed in class. If an item has a line drawn through it,
we simply just did not have time enough to do it. If an item is
circled that means homework and that it is due the next day. A
circled item may also mean that it needs mom or dad's attention.
This is usually an announcement or information that mom or dad needs to
know.
This is a great tool, but it can only work when
students use it. We ask that parents check it
nightly. This gives you an idea of our day and allows you to
discuss it with your child. This also allows you to check if they
have any homework and assist them if necessary. Finally, sign
or initial the planner and remind them to bring it to and from school
daily. Setting up a routine with your child so they know to place
it in the same spot each night when they come home form school.
Remember, if you
plan to learn, your need to learn to plan. Thank you for
your assistance in using your child's planner.
Breakfast/Lunch/Milk Costs
- The cost for a student breakfast will be $.95 and lunch will cost $1.75 this year. If your
child brings cold lunch or wants an additional milk with hot lunch,
he/she may purchase a milk for $.35.
Bearcat Diner -
Remember to keep
money in your Bearcat diner account. When you click on the Bearcat
Diner Lunch Menu link, you not only can view the menu, but also deposit
money into your account via the internet through the e~funds for school
program on the make a payment online link. You can also
check on lots of useful information such as the monthly payment
schedule. For example it lets you see how many school days are in
each month and what the cost would be for each month, so you know
exactly how much money to send. You can also view how much
money you have left in your account and download printable lunch
and breakfast menus for each month. Lots of other useful
info is especially nice if your child does not often get home
with things sent from school.
Lunch Dates
- Family members are always welcome to join us for lunch.
Please call Mrs. Heckenlively in the office (698-8200), send a note to
school, or jot it down in your child's planner, to let us know that you will be eating
hot lunch and your choice of A or B menu. The cost of an adult
meal is $2.45.
Water Bottles
- With the start of school also brings the late summer warm and
sometimes hot weather. Your child may bring a water bottle to
school to keep at their desk. Please also send an old sock to
wrap it in to keep the desk free from the moisture as the ice melts
inside.
Book Orders -
About once a month, you will receive a book order form. These
book orders offer very reasonable prices for children's
literature. If you would like to order, please send cash or a
check (made out to SCHOLASTIC) in an envelope with your child's names
on the front.
Holiday Celebrations
-We will celebrate three holidays this year. Fall Festival
(October), Christmas, and Valentine's Day. Room parents will be
divided up according to what you signed up to help with from the
volunteer note in the student information packet at the beginning of
the school year. A letter will be sent home letting you know
what you have been assigned.
Mail -
Mail will be coming home on a daily basis. I like to send it home
nightly instead of on one certain day. Your child may have had
Friday folders before where all the mail is sent on one day. I
like to send it daily for several reasons: some notes are timely
and need to be sent before Friday, some weeks there is lots of mail and
mailboxes get full, and finally looking at your child's returned work
on a nightly basis keeps you current on your child' progress and can
address issues promptly instead of waiting at the next week.
Please check your child's backpack each night, and let me know if you
are not receiving it.
Planner Pocket
- Often we have IMPORTANT notes that need to be sent home. We
have made a pocket in the front of your child's planner to put these
notes. This way notes or important information will not get lost in the other sea of things
that are often in the backpack. In the planner you may also see a
note that says "See Planner Pocket." This will be a visual note
for you to check the planner pocket.
The importance you place on learning is reflected in your child's
attitude. Your participation and help are important to your
child's learning. If there is anything I can do to assist you or
if you ever have questions or concerns please let me know.
Educationally yours,
Mrs. Knispel Fifth Grade Teacher
