The First Grade Newsletter

This Week with our Team

Our theme this week was, of course, Christmas!  We read lots of holiday stories and discussed how other people celebrate this time of year.  We packaged Christmas gifts for our parents and even had a holiday sing-a-long, led by our music teacher, Mrs. Stelling.  Our Christmas party was so much fun today.  Special thanks to the moms that helped provide the goodies for the party--Kathy, Karen and Linda!  We all appreciate you volunteering to help.
We completed our Wants and Needs unit in Social Studies.  After spending most of the month talking about needs, we spent this week discussing what a 'want' is.  We decided that a 'want' is something that we don't need to survive, but is a lot of fun to have.  For instance, toys, computers, and games are tons of fun, but we don't really need them to live.  For a jolly ending to this unit, the kids wrote letters to Santa and told him their 'wants' for the holiday.  You will find the sloppy-copy of this letter in your child's mail, but the final copy is on it's way to the North Pole!
This week the class achieved a goal that they have been working toward since August---a full compliment chart!  As a reward, the entire class got to have lunch in the classroom on Thursday!  The kids had a great time 'picnicing' in the room and I learned 2 very important lessons.  First, I learned that I need to check the menu before I tell the kids we can eat in the room. Spaghetti was not the best choice!!!  Second, I learned that something as simple as eating in the classroom can mean more to a 6 or 7 year old than you might think.  I even heard one student say to another student, "This is the best day ever!"  I love learning things from my first graders!  Merry Christmas!
