This Week with the Team

         Our theme this week was 'Fire Prevention'. We started off the week with a visit from some of Kearney's volunteer firefighters, including Natalie's dad! These men and women visited with the students about staying away from matches, checking smoke alarms, and knowing 2 ways out of a room if a fire were to occur. Later in the week we talked about more fire safety tips, including how to report a fire and when to use 'Stop, Drop and Roll'. I decided to write a fire safety question on each of the Friday folders this week. This question is meant to keep the discussion about fire safety over the weekend! I have also copied some fire safety tips on the back of today's newsletter. I hope you take some time to read over them with your child!
          Our reading theme this week was 'Teamwork'. We talked about how firefighters are a very important team. We also talked about our favorite sports teams. Ask your child to name some of the other types of teams we read about.
Today we completed our first reading unit and on Monday will begin unit 2. In the next 2 weeks I plan on performing running records with each student (so that I can see if there has been a change in reading level) and getting a baseline fluency sample from each of my first graders. This information will be shared on the report cards that will be sent home later this month.

Calling All Football Fans!!!!

With the baseball season coming to a close and football season in full swing, I have changed the bulletin board just outside of our classroom from a baseball diamond to a football field. If you have football pictures of your child, or if your son/daughter wants to draw a picture, I would love to hang these up for display! Cheerleader photos or drawings would also be great! Just send these to school in an envelope marked 'bulletin board'. Thanks for your help!
