Students in High Ability Learner English at the middle school should demonstrate achievement consistent with the advanced curriculum and expectations of the program.

Students are NOW participating in a daily ENGLISH course focused on critical thinking, as opposed to a pull-out class concentrating on reading and written responses. Many more types of work will be done in middle school HAL; a few of these include grammar, vocabulary, spelling, writing, and public speaking. Finished products will include oral and written presentations, quizzes and tests, a journal, and expository essays.

The successful HAL student should be able to maintain grades of A, B, or C at critical grading times such as mid-quarter progress reports or the end of the nine-week grading period. Should a student's average fall below this acceptable minimum, a conference with the student, parent(s), and school staff will promptly be convened to determine the most appropriate placement for the student. The director of the HAL Program will also be involved in this decision-making process.
