A significant focus of the HAL curriculum is essay writing. We begin at the paragraph level and expand to five paragraph essays by the middle of sixth grade. The next two years are spent practicing and refining this skill that will be used in high school English classes and college writing.
The district writing assessments given at each grade level provide a measure of the effectiveness of student learning.

IN 2008, HAL WRITING ASSESSMENT RESULTS WERE AS FOLLOWS:

Sixth Grade: Horizon
4 advanced (33.33%)
8 proficient (66.66%)

Sixth Grade: Sunrise
6 advanced (40%)
9 proficient (60%)

Seventh Grade: Horizon
