This year we are going to have a lot of fun with various forms of literature and writing, grammar, public speaking, creative drama, even journalism and student congress. My goal as a teacher is that by the end of the year, you will be BLOWN AWAY with how much you have learned. However, to do all these wonderful things, we need to have a few ground rules. The following are expected guidelines for peaceful co-existence in Mrs. Konz's classroom. 1. Be in your assigned seat when the bell rings. If your entire person is not physically in the room when the bell begins to ring, you are tardy. 2. Keep absences to a minimum. Contact Mrs. Konz or a peer immediately when an absence occurs. If you anticipate a planned absence, visit with me beforehand to learn what work you need to make up. 3. Bring all books and materials to class. You will not be allowed to leave the room to retrieve anything: homework, book, paper, pen, etc. 4. Formal assignments such as portfolios, presentations, major essays, etc., should be typed. If circumstances prevent typing, write work neatly in blue or black ink ONLY, skipping one line between each line of text. Follow the standard MLA heading format you were taught in class the first day of school. 5. Assignments are due when class starts. You have three options for incomplete homework: a) Stay after school THAT DAY to complete it for one letter-grade deduction. Instead of 10/10, you will receive 9/10, IF it is completed accurately and neatly. If the homework would have received 9/10, you will earn 8/10. b) Turn it in during the next day's English class for a maximum score of 7/10, or 70% c) Earn a 0 for homework not completed by the start of the following class. Note: this system will be used for the rare slip-up. Chronic offenders will earn a ) for late work after utilizing the above system three times per semester. 6. There will be no gum, snacks, pop, or candy in the classroom. Occasionally, we will have a planned celebration, teacher-organized, in which you will be allowed to bring food items. You will have plenty of notice regarding these celebrations. 7. Grading will be on a point basis. Thus students who earn 93% of the total number of points possible per quarter will receive the letter grade of A. 8. Students may do extra credit only if all other work is complete, and there are no zeroes for the quarter.
