Celebrating My Freedom
by Dominique
I like to celebrate my freedom by thinking of some of the rights and privileges that we as Americans are lucky to have. A few examples include freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom to enter and leave the country as we please.
Freedom of religion is a basic right of the American people. No one can be persecuted for his or her beliefs. That is, of course, not true in all countries, for example, Afghanistan under Taliban rule. Because of the Taliban's fundamentalist beliefs, women and children were not allowed to become educated and had to work at home, like prisoners with their faces covered.
Freedom of speech is another privilege that Americans have. We can say or do anything we please, even if the government doesn't approve of it. In Iraq however, before the American Invasion, people were imprisoned or killed for their opinions.
Another thing I would like to mention is that we Americans have the freedom of leaving and entering the U.S. whenever we want. In Cuba, that is not the case. Few people receive the permission of the government to leave, and refugees often risk their lives for freedom.
While we Americans have many more privileges and rights to celebrate, I found these some of the most important ones, and I hope you do, too!
