SIXTH GRADE KEYBOARDING
The goal of the sixth grade keyboarding class is to provide the opportunity for each student to learn and/or improve the touch method of keyboarding while emphasizing speed, accuracy, basic literacy requirements for writing and productivity.
Materials Utilized 1. The Herzog System of Keyboarding 2. Microsoft Office 3. Safari 4. Daily Language Workouts
Suggested Curriculum Guide
Day 1˘Introduce students to the course content and expectations. Go over the information on pages 3 and 4 in the Herzog textbook.
Day 2˘Explain the process of logging onto the school network, how to create and save a document using Microsoft Word, and cover the various menus for Microsoft Word. (Keyboarding pre-skills test given. Students≠ hands are covered and they take 60 second test - time permitting)
Days 3 √ 7-- The material on pages 5 through 9 of the Herzog book is covered one page per day.
Remaining Days
1. After the students are finished with the review, they practice on the remainder of the drill/practice material found on Pages 11 through 19 After they have completed this material, they take a skills/technique test to determine their speed and accuracy level.
2. One day each week, the students work on their speed and accuracy skills by taking speed tests. These tests are found on Pages 13 and 16 in the Herzog book.
3. Composition is also a part of the keyboarding skill and several activities are found in the Herzog book to reinforce this skill. Also, one day each week is devoted to composition practice. Students are given material by the teacher to complete for these activities. These activities are taken from the writing composition book.
Sample schedule might be: Monday, Wednesday, Friday˘students work on drill/practice material. Tuesday˘students work on composition material. Thursday˘Students work on speed and accuracy 60-second timings.
If the student completes all of the drill/practice material and passes the skills test, then Pages 20-22 are completed.
4. Internet˘1 to 2 days
During these days, the students learn about Internet safety, bookmarks, keying in web site addresses (accuracy/sites change), and efficient searches. (We have started doing this with a library skills class, so I don≠t cover as much, but I do reinforce what they have been taught.)
5. Power Point
Power Point is introduced to the students either in this class or during the 10th period explore period. The students learn about the basics of Power Point and then create a Power Point document of their own in which they present to the class.
