Keyboarding Review/Introduction

The teacher will review or introduce (depending on student need) the alphabetic keyboarding reaches.  After the review, the students will practice on the remainder of the drill/practice material found on Pages 11 through 19.  After they review this material, they take skills/technique tests to determine their speed and accuracy level.

Computer Applications

The duration of the class will be spent on introducing or reviewing basic computer applications.  The following is a basic guideline of what is being taught.  Each teacher may come up with a way of teaching each area listed.

Word Processing

The students will create a short word processing document.  They will learn and apply various formatting features.  Some of the formatting features would include but not be limited to:  Text appearance, Page Setup, Alignment and Spacing.

Paint/Draw

Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of paint and draw tools while creating a simple paint document.  Teachers will be looking for appropriate use of tools to create a simple, easy to understand picture.

Spreadsheet

Based on information given to the student by the teacher, students will create a simple spreadsheet and chart.  Students will learn how to set up, manipulate information, enter formulas and functions, and the steps to create a simple chart.

Presentations

Students will apply basic tools to create a short presentation on what they have created during this class.  The presentation will include at least text, graphics, animations, transitions, and sound.

Internet

The students will conduct a short Internet search.  The teacher will create a short list of questions for students to search the Internet for correct answers.

Keyboarding Review/Introduction

Day 1
Review the reaches from pages 5 through 9 in the Herzog keyboarding book.  Have students key out of the Herzog book.

Day 2
Keyboarding workday.  Students will spend the period practicing the keyboarding reaches.  They may key out of the Herzog book or key sentences and paragraphs on their own.

Day 3
Reach pre-test.  Each student will key in the alphabet once while the teacher watches the student≠s reaches.  Keep track of mistakes on Keyboarding Techniques Rubric (used from NE Business Ed. Assessment).

Day 4
Keyboarding workday.  Students will spend the period practicing the keyboarding reaches.  They may key out of the Herzog book or key sentences and paragraphs on their own.

Day 5
Techniques Test.  Students will key in a predetermined sentence that uses every letter in the alphabet.  You can usually find an example in an old or new keyboarding book.  Students will also be graded on their body position, hand and finger position, and eye-head position.

Day 6
Finish Technique Test.  May take you two days to complete

Computer Applications

Word Processing
The students will create a short word processing document.  They will learn and apply various formatting features.  Some of the formatting features would include but not be limited to:  Text appearance, Page Setup, Alignment and Spacing.

Day 1
Introduce word processing assignment.  The students will key in a short informational letter or advertisement for a product of their choice.  The product may be already in existence or it can be something that they want to create. Examples would be a car or a never-ending soft drink.

The paper will consist of at least 10 sentences containing the following items:
1.    Product name
2.    Price of product
3.    Release Date of product
4.    Contact person (student) and how to contact
5.    Where to purchase product
6.    5 features of product (why would people want to buy product)

The students will spend the remainder of the period keying in the information from above in a simple list (no sentences).

Day 2
Students will spend the period keying a rough draft of their letter.  When finished they should reread to make sure that they have included everything from the required list.  They may exchange computers with another student to check each other≠s paper.

Day 3
Cover the following items and give general guidelines for the paper.
1.    Spelling and Grammar Check (don≠t add words to dictionary, not all grammar corrections may be the way your teacher wants it done)
2.    Thesaurus (use the thesaurus to create better word choice, but don≠t change the meaning of you sentences)
3.    Font - type, size and styles (use a nice readable font, not to large, use styles to call attention to important information)

For the remainder of the period students will manipulate their paper based on tools learned today.

Day 4
Cover the following items and give general guidelines for the paper.
1.    Horizontal Alignment (need to change the alignment of the title or body of the paper)
2.    Line Spacing (will need to change the spacing of the body of the paper √ remember to keep it to one page in length)
3.    Margins (margins must be changed at least a little, to show knowledge of changing margins √ 1.5 maximum)

Day 5
Cover the following items and give general guidelines for the paper.
1.    Header/Footer √ explain what could be placed in a header or footer and how to format the text (must place something in either the header or footer)
2.    Indents √ explain the indent markers located on the horizontal ruler (must use the first line indent marker to indent paragraphs)

Day 6
Student will recheck their papers to make sure they have the needed information and have formatted the document as instructed over the last 3 days.  Upon making sure that they have completed the assignment they need to print and hand in their final document.

Day 7
Students will complete and be graded on a word processing assessment.  An example is located in the 7th Grade Folder and the Assessments Folder located in the 7th Curriculum folder in my documents folder.

Paint/Draw

Students will demonstrate a basic understanding of paint and draw tools while creating a simple paint document.  Teachers will be looking for appropriate use of tools to create a simple, easy to understand picture.

Day 1
Explain the paint/draw assignment.  The students will create a freehand picture using the tools provided in the program.  The picture will feature the product they described in the word processing assignment.  The product must be placed in a scene showing the product in action or just a simple scene with the product sitting there.
Cover the various tools available in the paint program that is being used.  Draw a simple scene while using the tools to show that the end picture must show the product but doesn≠t have to be an artistic picture.
The remainder of the period should be used by the students creating pictures while experimenting with the tools.  They will not save anything that they create today.

Day 2-3
Students will create their picture over the next two-class period.

Spreadsheet

Based on information given to the student by the teacher, students will create a simple spreadsheet and chart.  Students will learn how to set up, manipulate information, enter formulas and functions, and the steps to create a simple chart.

Day 1
Explain to the students that they will be creating a simple spreadsheet and chart based on the sales and costs of producing their product using amounts produced by the teacher and themselves.  Next introduce students to the various parts of a spreadsheet (i.e. rows, columns, cells, headings) and how to enter text and select and change cell information. Page Orientation will also be covered so that the students will be able to fit all the information on one page.  Students will then enter in the text and amounts provided to them by the teacher (found in the 7th Grade Spreadsheet file).  Students need to make sure that they enter in the information exactly as it is seen on the paper.

Day 2 & 3
Formulas and Functions will be taught to the students.  Students will be required to place a simple formula into the spreadsheet after being taught the steps.  Then the students will place a simple (average) function into the chart to show the averages for each column.

Day 4
The teacher will cover the basics of changing the appearance of a spreadsheet.  A list of those things covered, but not limited to follows
1.    Page Setup (Gridlines and Headings)
2.    Page Orientation
3.    Margins
4.    Formatting Fonts
5.    Alignment and Spacing
6.    Formatting Numbers
7.    Border and Shading (show but do not have students do this)

Students will then apply what they have learned to their own project, making sure that they apply all that was shown to them during the period.

Day 5
The teacher will go through the steps to create a chart with the chart wizard.  First select A1:A5 and release, press and hold the Command Key and select G1:I5.  This will select the needed information needed for the chart.  Click on the Chard Wizard button located on the Standard toolbar.  Select a bar chart and click on Next.  Fill in the needed information needed to complete a nice looking chart.  Click Finish when done.  The teacher will then show how to use the Formatting Palette to manipulate and change the chart.

Day 6
The students will print off their spreadsheet and chart together.  They will print with formulas and functions showing.  They will need to choose Preference from the Word menu.  When the Preference dialog box opens they need to choose Formulas from the right hand side of the View radio button.  Resize the columns so that everything fits on one page and print in black and white.

Day 7
Students will complete and be graded on a spreadsheet assessment.  An example is located in the 7th Grade Folder and the Assessments Folder located in the 7th Curriculum folder in my documents folder.

Presentations

Students will apply basic tools to create a short presentation on what they have created during this class.  The presentation will include at least text, graphics, animations, transitions, notes and sound.

Day 1
Begin with a quick review of what they learned in 6th grade
    New slide
    Add and manipulate text
    Add clip art
    Create animation
    Add transitions
    Add text shapes
Students will create a short presentation on a topic of their choice, which will not be saved; using what was reviewed during the period.

Day 2
Review/teach the students how to import graphics from various programs to be incorporated into a presentation.  Since we used AppleWorks for our picture and Excel for our chart I use those for examples on how to import.
Have the students begin creating a short presentation on their product.  The presentation will be 4 to 6 slides in length, include information from the word processing, paint/draw, and spreadsheet assignments.  The basic order will be a title slide, a text slide, a clip art slide, and a chart slide.  Students may add a slide to include more information about their product and another slide to conclude the presentation.  The student must keep text on the slides to a minimum and add any other additional text into the notes section of the screen.  The students will use the notes as they present the presentation to the class.

Day 3-4
Work days to complete the project.  The teacher should monitor the progress students are making and continue to emphasize to students, that they need to limit the amount of text that is placed on a slide.

Day 5-8
Students will present the slide show to the class.  Students will use a microphone and a remote mouse to present.  They should try to maintain good eye contact with the audience while following their notes.

Internet

The students will conduct a short Internet search.  The teacher will create a short list of questions for students to search the Internet for correct answers.
